Day 1-3, 9-11 (At Sea)
We boarded the ship in San Francisco around 2pm on Friday, Oct 23. We toured a bit of the ship, and then headed to our rooms. Most of these pictures are from our balcony as we left port.
Our room was 00064 (10th floor, room 0064), which was actually really great for us. Our balcony was about twice the size of the others because we were the very last room on the starboard side of the 10th floor, so it wrapped around the back a little. We had two chairs, a table, and a lounge chair. (As you’ll see in the photos).
The Norwegian Sun was a really nice ship, but it was clear it was also a bit older. The decor and carpets were reminiscent of the older ships. Our cruise didn’t have many people our age – I believe perhaps around 50? the other 1950 passengers were almost entirely retirees. It was a great crowd though, and we met a number of nice people from all over the world (some from SF, Pennsylvania, Ireland, Wales, etc.)
On board the main dining room was the Four Seasons, but we also ate at Seven Seas a few times. This was the formal dining room, so on the dress up nights this was where everyone wanted to eat, thus sometimes there was quite a line to get in. Food at both restaurants were very nice, no reservations required.
As part of our package, we were also able to eat at two of the Specialty restaurants for free. (These restaurants charge a $10 cover charge per person to dine there). First we went to Le Bistro, a French restaurant. It was nice, the food was good, and we had a free bottle of wine. A few days later we went to Il Adagio, an Italian restaurant, which was also very good. Staff everywhere on board ship was great, waiters were usually quick to please, but also stayed in the background so as not to interrupt anyone.
Entertainment on the ship was also great! The first night we had the comedian Rex Havens, who was quite funny and focuses on male-female relationships. He picked on us a fair bit because we were the only newlywed couple in the crowd. Another couple was celebrating their 64th anniversary, and were given a free bottle of wine. We both were given a copy of Rex’s audio CD and his book, Everything I Needed to Know I Learned From My Wife.
We also had a performance from the Jean Ann Ryan Co., which was sort of a combination of broadway (singing and dancing) and Cirque du Soleil. One of the shows they performed was called Cirque Pan, and was a Cirque du Soleil styled performance of Peter Pan.
I REALLY tried to get the pictures to show in the order that they were taken, but I’m brand new to Flickr (um, 4 hours maybe?) so I’m having some difficulties!
